Infrastructure Development on Phuket: A New Era of Growth Driven by Government and Private Investment
In 2024–2026, Phuket’s development has reached a new milestone: the island is transitioning from a "resort province" into a high-tech logistics hub. The Thai government, in collaboration with private investors, is implementing an ambitious modernization plan with a total value exceeding hundreds of billions of baht.
Below is an overview of the key changes currently reshaping the island and driving real estate appreciation in strategically important areas.
1. Phuket Airport: Expansion to 18 Million Passengers
As the island's main gateway is reaching its current capacity, AOT (Airports of Thailand) has launched the second phase of the Phuket International Airport expansion.
-
The Goal: Increase passenger capacity from 12.5 million to 18 million per year.
-
The Scope: Expansion of the international terminal, construction of new taxiways, and additional aircraft parking stands.
-
Timeline: Design phases are concluding by mid-2026, with major construction expected through 2027–2028.
-
The Second Airport: Discussions are also underway for the Andaman International Airport in neighboring Phang Nga province, which will eventually handle long-haul wide-body flights.
2. New Roads and Interchanges: "Goodbye, Traffic"
Transport connectivity is the top priority. Major projects aim to separate tourist traffic from local transit.
-
Muang Mai – Koh Kaew – Kathu Expressway: A new high-speed highway that will allow travelers to reach the south of the island from the airport while bypassing the traffic lights on the main Thepkasattri Road. The project cost is estimated at approximately 47 billion baht.
-
Kathu – Patong Tunnel: A long-awaited project that will link the central part of the island to Patong via a safe, fast route, bypassing the dangerous mountain winding road. Completion is targeted for 2030.
-
Underpasses: Construction of multi-level interchanges continues, including the critical junction at the Heroines Monument, which will significantly accelerate North-South travel.
3. Chalong District: The Hub of Family Life and Investment
Chalong has evolved from a "transit zone" on the way to Rawai and Nai Harn into a fully developed residential cluster with the island's best infrastructure for expats:
-
Education: It hosts a concentration of top-tier international schools (BCIS, HeadStart, etc.).
-
Sports and Wellness: Proximity to the world-famous Muay Thai street (Soi Ta-iad), modern hospitals, and world-class fitness centers.
-
Logistics: The Chalong Circle underpass has already eased traffic significantly. In the future, Chalong is planned to be the terminus for the Phuket Light Rail, which will connect the south of the island directly to the airport.
4. Infrastructure Near Mutti Family Villas
The Mutti Family Villas project, located in the Soi Sai Namyen area of Chalong, sits at the epicenter of these qualitative improvements.
Note for Investors: The location of the villas was chosen for its peaceful hillside setting, yet it remains only 5–10 minutes away from all major infrastructure updates.
Planned and Ongoing Developments Nearby:
-
Retail Cluster: Robinson Lifestyle Mall and Lotus’s Chalong are already operational nearby and continue to expand their retail and service offerings.
-
Road Accessibility: Modernization of roads adjacent to Chao Fa West ensures that Mutti Family Villas residents have seamless access to schools and hospitals without getting stuck in general city congestion.
-
Eco-Environment & Smart City: Phuket is actively adopting "Smart City" concepts. The Chalong area is seeing upgrades in smart street lighting, CCTV security, and waste management systems, enhancing the prestige and safety of residential complexes.
-
Rental Demand: Due to the proximity to BCIS school and new transport hubs, real estate in this micro-district is showing stable growth in rental rates from expat families.
